Architect and hotelier Matthew Goodwin redid an abandoned motel on the Californian coast into a hotel.

Built in 1953, the motel stood on the highway that runs along the Pacific Coast and the Surfrider Beach, where the 1966 cult film The Endless Summer was shot.

Matthew Goodwin had a great practice in New York, not only as an architect, but also as a developer. Together with his wife Emma Crowther and business partner Alessandro Zampedri, he chose Surfrider as the site of his new project. The team decided to rebuild the interior, creating 18 light rooms and two suites, a library, a rooftop bar and a restaurant.

Monochrome palette and simple materials, light wood and sisal, furniture of Danish design make the place luxurious in its unassuming beauty.

Teak, stone, ceramic tiles, white linens, wicker lampshades, books, household items and plants - all together gives the feeling of giving, your own home by the sea. There are sun loungers, a fireplace and an audio system on the roof terrace. The restaurant serves seasonal local produce and picnics.

• The Surfrider Malibu, from $ 329.
