Next architects: an attraction bridge in china

In the Chinese city of Changsha, the construction of the original pedestrian bridge was completed. The authors of the project, the Dutch studio Next Architects, called the construction “Lucky Knot”, emphasizing its unusual shape. A steel red bridge twists like a Möbius strip, its sharp turns and climbs also resemble the classic “roller coaster” ride. One of the authors of the project, John de Water, says that the shape of the bridge was borrowed from the Chinese art of weaving, in which the knot traditionally symbolizes luck. The shape of the bridge is connected with the peculiarities of the local landscape and the differences in its height. Lucky Knot Bridge connects the city of Changshu and Lake Meihi, its high elevation point provides a scenic view of the mountain range adjacent to the lake.

Thanks to sharp rises and bends, the bridge resembles a famous attraction. The length of the bridge Lucky Knot is 185 meters, width - 24 meters. The winding forms of the bridge are determined by the differences of the local landscape. For the convenience of pedestrians, stairs were made on separate sections of the bridge. The bridge offers a picturesque view of the lake and the mountain range adjacent to it. The new bridge is an unusual engineering structure in an urban environment.

The "twisted" silhouette of the bridge resembles another project of the Dutch studio - The Elastic Perspective - a staircase in Barendrecht (Holland), also serving as a viewing platform.
