In 2001, Dutch design superstar Marcel Wanders and marketing expert Casper Vissers decided to transform the already existing Wanders Wonders company into a new brand of extravagant designer furniture.

The company name is a game with the Dutch word mooi - “beautiful”. Tripled "o" expresses a degree of delight: "sooo beautiful" furniture! The project was conceived as a creative experiment, as an alternative to rational commercial design. Initially, Wanders intended to create objects exclusively for advanced connoisseurs. However, Moooi was quickly recognized not only by art-design fans and collectors, but simply by wealthy consumers.

Unlike the modernists, who deified the function, the creator of the Moooi brand put decor at the forefront. “Enough of the function, you need more love. More fantasy, dreams, memories and feelings, ”said Wanders. And he relied on mass production, imitating manual work. He was not afraid to embody the most unusual and strange ideas - his own, as well as other designers - Maarten Baas, Jürgen Bey, Jasper Morrison, Bertyan Pot, the creators of Studio Jobs, Ross Lovegróv and many others under the Moooi brand. Unexpected use of materials, irony and gaming overtones - all these are the main qualities of Moooi objects.

Among the techniques used by designers there is a truly shocking. What is worth only the famous "burnt" Smoke collection of Marten Baas, released under the brand name Moooi in 2002. Baroque chairs are burned with a blowtorch and then coated with resin to conserve the burned elements. A little later, the collection was replenished with armchairs decorated in a similar manner.

Resembling a giant spider chandelier - homage to Ingo Mourer, the author of the famous lamps and lighting installations. The model is not only expressive in form, but also practical: adjustable brackets, 80 cm long, allow you to direct the light to where it is needed.

In 2005, Studio Job designers, Job Smiths and Ninke Tunagel, developed the Paper furniture collection for Moooi. The furniture is made of paper, cardboard and wood, painted white. The ruler, consisting of cabinets, tables and chest of drawers, was complemented by the Paper Collection chandelier, an ironic transposition of baroque form into a modern "cartoon" language, as well as embodied in cardboard.

One of the most controversial and controversial Moooi collections was created in 2006 by the designers of the Swedish group Front. The Animal series is a floor lamp, a table lamp and a tray, the bases of which are realistic animal sculptures - a horse, a rabbit and a pig - full-size. "Animal" collection - the call does not take life too seriously, and to bring into its interiors an element of the game.

“Don't you want a horse to light your house and a pig serve your guests?” Front girls ask.

The Monster collection, developed by Marcel Wanders in 2010, is evidence of how the master is not afraid to express in the design the “dark side of the soul”, withering its fears and melancholy. On chairs, sofas and black quilted leather cushions, he portrays devilishly grinning faces, thus overcoming these fears, making his demons ridiculous and harmless.
