“I dream of people freeing themselves from nostalgia, outdated traditions, hardened habits and nonsense.” The joke about the fact that his wristwatch shows time ten years ahead is true. Another series of jokes connected with the designer's wardrobe: Fifteen years ago, he brought his black suits from the charity organization Salvation Army from Dries van Noten, Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garcons. And now he has only white and pink clothes: 30 pairs of white jeans, white sweaters, T-shirts and socks. In general, this person is busy with himself and his image. The lightened gamut became his firm preference: white, light green, yellow and, of course, a special pink - artificial and cloying, like cheap candy. More recently, Rashid declared that pink is a new black. He tried hard to convince male heterosexuals that the "pink" is indispensable for a real male interior.

Rashid not only designs things and interiors, he always postulates something and promotes. Five years ago, he was fascinated by the infotainment (from the English to informe and to each other), he spoke about the teaching and entertainment function of design. In 2007, I talked about yestermorrow - what we call retrofuturism in Russian. His own apartment in Chelsea New York is a sample of Karimov's taste: inflatable furniture in the style of the 60s looks cheerful and futuristic, not at all resembling a dusty vintage.

In 2016 in Milan during the EuroCucina exhibition, the German company Rational presented a new model Floo. The result of two years of work of Karim Rashid with Rational engineers was a dazzling-white minimalist kitchen, one of the brightest author's novelties of the year.

Career Karim Rashid went up in 1993. Prior to that, he managed to learn and work in Milan, and then suffered for six years at the Canadian design bureau in Toronto, designing everything that gets from laser devices to mailboxes. There he filled his hand, but suffered from a blunt approach and lack of beauty. In the end, fled to New York. He offered his services to a hundred companies, and only from one received an order to make items for serving the table: the Nambe company from Santa Fe did not lose. Buyers liked the vases, salt shakers, forks and knives so much that Nambe was selling for three million dollars a year, and things soon fell into the collection of the local museum. The designer Karim Rashid has an elder brother - famous architect Hani Rashid. Both brothers studied in Europe and New York and chose similar creative professions under the influence of their father, an abstract artist with a French education, who moved to Paris from his native Cairo (Egypt) in the 1950s, later the family emigrated to England, then to Canada.

Rashid is the inventor of his own solar signs: crossed pills in different configurations appear with him every time he needs an ornament or just a decor. All his life he solves the same problem: the forms must be advanced and, as it were, created by the intellect, not touched by any culture, and the author’s personal style must be recognized at a glance.

Rashid is able to overtake the industry not only in images, but also in strategy. One of his hobbies is designing for the disabled and the elderly. And he is right: the population of Europe is rapidly aging, America is catching up with it. “We understand this is a good thing,” says Rashid. “By the mid-2010s, there will be 60 million retirees in the USA!” And Rashid is right, older people are becoming the main consumer group not only in America, but throughout the world.
