California

West Coast USA: Hollywood Hills, Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego ... Sun-drenched landscapes with palm trees and white concrete buildings, blue ocean and pink sunset air. Among the top addresses of appealing California is the “American Cannes” - Palm Springs - a town in the desert, which became the embodiment of the American dream and the architectural “reserve” of modernism.

In 2017, it was exactly 70 years since the construction of Twin Palms in Palm Springs - the villas of Frank Sinatra, designed by Stuart Williams. To this masterpiece is worth adding one-story works of John Lautner, Albert Frey, William Pereira, Richard Neutra, Rudolf Schindler and, of course, William Creesel. The record holder of buildings (designed around 40,000 houses during his long life), architect William Crisel (William Krisel, 1924–05.06.2017) helped to almost double the size of Palm Springs, making modernist villas an affordable type of housing for the middle class. Small houses with a patio, a swimming pool and a pair of palm trees have become a brilliant project of the Alexander Construction Company.

The annual February week of modernism attracts about 60,000 people from all over the world to Palm Springs, who are happy to explore the interior achievements of midcentury, visit Jeffrey Burnett, the famous garden of cheekeners, are inspired by the toning color and original mixes of set designers Jonathan Adler and Christopher Kennedy, repeat the names of Ezov chairs and Bertoya ...

Success is a photograph resembling the pictures of Julius Shulman (Julius Shulman), who formed and fixed the California lifestyle of the 1950s and 1960s. In addition to the palm leaf and the deserted Californian landscape, galleries and museums exhibit images of American oldtimers, metal trailers, wagons and the “main street of the USA” perspective - Route 66 Highway. From May to October 2017, the London Design Museum shows California: Designing Freedom - the exhibition looks at Western coastline from Mickey Mouse to the Apple campus and genetic engineering. And if anyone could have doubts about the power of Californian design, then after getting acquainted with this “work” by curator Brendan McGetrick (Brendan McGetrick) they disappear forever.
