Autoban: design of the xxi century "made in turkey"

Autoban bureau designers loved the skillful combination of global and local - Turkish authors added delicate warm notes of national color to the international style.

Seykhan Ozdemir and Sefer Chaglar met at the Istanbul Academy of Fine Arts. Seyhan studied architecture, Sefer - design. For 10 years, Autoban has designed more than 300 facilities around the world. Among the successes there are both the airport in Baku and the gastropub in London (Duck and Rice). Here is what they said in an exclusive interview with INTERIOR + DESIGN.

“Warm contemporary is the style that defines today's environment. Sterile minimalism is out.

“We were brought up on an international classic: the teachers instilled in us the ideas of Bauhaus. In the works of people from this school admire the quality, functionality and elegant simplicity. Today we try not to succumb to any outside influences in order to preserve our own identity. We strongly eschew fashion trends, fight for the timeless nature of the interiors - so that what is happening in the industry does not crush us.

If we talk about global trends, it is worth noting the movement of design in the direction of warm contemporary - a modern style in a warm, humane version. It is he who determines our current environment, it is he who is in tune with our approach. When we started, the sterile, cold minimalism of the 90s was almost completely obsolete. We were in the right place at the right time.

We live in a post-industrial era. Technology allows you to implement almost everything that is conceived. At the disposal of the author 3D-printers, machines, cutting marble into millimeter slabs. But design is not limited to technology. The main thing in design is intention, purpose.

The interiors of the Heydar Aliyev International Airport in Baku are by far the most ambitious work of Autoban. "Our main idea was to break with the generally accepted typology." The project is remembered primarily by structures-cocoons, trimmed with oak veneer, and well-designed natural lighting. Residential complex Savoy Ulus, Istanbul. Public area.

Among the priorities of the design bureau Autoban is an environmentally responsible design. It begins with the selection of materials and technologies. So, in the interiors of the same Heydar Aliyev airport, we used a quartz-based composite for flooring: it is both natural and industrial at the same time. Quartz is incredibly resistant to wear. To minimize the consumption of materials, we designed the “half” structures, which were called cocoons. Light wood varieties have been chosen for the framework, since Baku is located in a seismically dangerous zone. Applied energy-saving lamps and efficient lighting systems. And most importantly, the maximum use of natural light, which is the most powerful energy saver. According to our forecasts, in the future, the number of buildings constructed of “recycled” materials, such as recycled steel, will increase. And more and more houses will have their own autonomous energy and water supply systems. ”

Gaspar is a restaurant in Istanbul, in a former printing house. The authors applied the knollling system, it provides for the organization of elements either in parallel or with a shift of 90 °. All furniture is also designed by a design duet. Chinese gastropub Duck and Rice in London's Soho.
