In 1954, resting on the beach in Miami, Sally Sirkin Lewis painted outfits. After seeing her sketches, one man asked to develop an apartment design for him. Agreeing, she plunged headlong into the matter, about which she really knew nothing. Thus began the history of the brand J. Robert Scott, which Sally owns and develops furniture for.

SALON: The style in which you work is called “Californian design”. What should be understood by this?

- California is not only a state, it is also a special state of mind, a huge creative potential and a pleasant, relaxed lifestyle. That's what I try to reflect in the design. For my work I choose only natural materials, such as stone, wood and sisal. I use pale woody tones, the color of camel's hair, ivory, flax.

S: What does such an interior look like?

- He is not cluttered with furniture. This is something on the verge of art, and it can be modern, American or African. I trim furniture with veneer or natural stone and thus combine it with materials inherent in the place in which the house is located.

S: How did you become a designer and why did you start producing your own furniture?

- By chance, in 1954, on the beach in Miami, I painted outfits, one person saw it and said: "Your style, can you design your apartment?" She knew only that everything will work out. Years later, I had a problem: I could not find furniture in my style. But the talented people whom I met by chance, began to make interior items for me. Later, in 1972, I opened the first showroom in the design district of Los Angeles.

S: For all this time, your approach to design has somehow changed?

“I became more prepared, more luxury-oriented, and with freedom I had the freedom to use more and more exotic materials, each of which is manually processed here in the factory.

S: For furniture J. ROBERT SCOTT, the Ombré finish that you designed is used. What is its feature?

- This is wood veneer finish, it is created manually. I like the paintings of the artist Marie Loren sin, in which different shades of the same color gently flow into each other. Also with furniture. Thanks to Ombré, a watercolor effect appears on its surface: the color seems to blur, the colors disappear.

S: Do you have any other unique designs?

- I have 150 different patents in the field of furniture design. J. ROBERT SCOTT also has its own textile collection, there are about thirty of them. The fabrics we had appeared in the early 1980s - Thai silk, glossy, woven by hand. This quality in the United States no longer know.
