When you arrive in Tartu, in addition to the famous University of Tartu, be sure to visit the restaurant Püssirohukelder ("Powder warehouse"). The history of this building is as follows. In 1763, Catherine II ordered the fortification of the city of Tartu. It was decided to build a warehouse for the storage of gunpowder. For this, they chose a hill in a park near the Town Hall. "Until 1827, says the designer Aivar Roosaar, - the building was used for its intended purpose, then as a warehouse of building materials and even as a laboratory of the University of Tartu. After the reconstruction, a tavern, restaurant and wine cellar opened here. Püssirohukelder serves traditional Estonian dishes. For example, soup cooked in a dough pot. For dessert - caramelized kissel, bread mousse with raisins and cottage cheese cake with cherry.
