At one time, functionalism elevated the architectural design to the rank of a design element, and declared excessive decorativeness a sign of decline. After a hundred years, no one finds contradictions in these seemingly opposite approaches to architecture and interior. Now, in the days of eclecticism, the combination of industrial pipes and brick walls with carved furniture, rhinestones and other decorative delights seems to us the embodiment of harmony.
