Architects Maria and Nikita Bakharevy talk about why the East and Art Deco can be harmoniously combined in the interior.

Maria Bakhareva: “Usually in modern interiors the East is the author’s interpretation of the Oriental style. And we have this: this is some kind of reminiscence of style. To make it convincing, you need (I will say about it first of all) to actively develop all surfaces. That is, you make the interior the most active architectural means: rich color, unusual finishes, wall panels, specially created for this interior. What for? What does this give? A lot of things. You replace with this the lack of a view from the window, the absence of a “correct” (in this case — eastern) landscape behind the window, the absence of bright natural light.
