Vitra: furniture for life

Trumps of the Swiss company Vitra - educational activities, intelligent design. Founded in 1934, Vitra is today known for cooperation with renowned designers and especially for reissuing cult objects of the 20th century: chairs, tables and chairs by Jean Prouvé, George Nelson, Charles and Ray Imz - the company acquired the rights to produce items from the classics of modernism from copyright holders.

The head of the Vitra Home direction Mirka Kulberg tells about the main trends in furniture design.

“Nowadays, design is firmly tied to the trend of sustainable development. It is important for the consumer where and how, from what materials the thing is produced. It can be said that the transparent production process itself has become a trend. However, let's be honest: the final product is still more significant for the consumer than the intermediate stages - first of all, he needs a good design. Evaluating a thing, it comes not so much from the fact that it is fashionable or not, but from its quality. Attract valuable wood, luxury upholstery, comfortable fillers - a modern client has risen from the level of consumption to investment: he consciously invests money in furnishings.

Sometimes factories replicate objects, the differences between which, by and large, are small: they make a sofa at the sofa, a table at the table. We do not want to convince our customers that they must constantly change the old to the new. Vitra contributes to environmental protection not only by controlling all stages of production or using recycled materials. But also creating things that live long, both physically and morally. In this sense, a classic that has passed the test of time is a win-win. An example is the work of the designer-engineer Jean Prouve: the furniture he designed in his workshop. A few years ago, Vitra produced 17 design objects in conjunction with the G-Star fashion brand and the Pruve family (led by designer Katrin). Created in the middle of the twentieth century, they are adapted by us to the standards of luxury and comfort of today. ”

The brand became famous for its own Vitra Design Museum (Vitra Design Museum), the building of which was designed by the Pritzker Prize winner Frank Gehry. After that, continued cooperation with the best architects began: the Vitra campus created real stars, including Tadao Ando, Alvaro Siza, Zaha Hadid.
