What is the hood in the kitchen?

At first glance, it may seem that the hood is absolutely useless in the kitchen thing. But:

  • During cooking, combustion products and harmful vapors can be released. This is, first of all, important for gas stoves, because during their work, a huge amount of carbon dioxide is released (and if the burner dies out, the kitchen can quickly fill up with hazardous household gas). However, when working with electric stoves, pollution and harmful fumes are no less - soot and grease are emitted. And all these evaporations must not only be filtered, but completely removed.
  • In addition to safety, during cooking one has to deal with “aesthetic” nuances, namely, smell. Not all products smell good while cooking. For example, the smell of fish is not only very specific, but also eats into everything that comes its way for a long time. But this question is especially relevant if a pregnant woman lives in the house.

One can talk endlessly about the delights of toxicosis, but intolerance to all sorts of smells is one of its most frequent and unpleasant manifestations. Therefore, getting rid of all odors in the kitchen while cooking during this period is very important.

  • Fat, soot, fumes are deposited on furniture, walls, ceiling. It spoils the look of the kitchen. And if the furniture, household appliances, etc. you can clean it, but with the walls and ceiling this number will not work - with a large number of fumes you will soon have to do repairs, as even with rare and short use of the stove (especially gas!), they turn yellow and become an indistinct and ugly shade.

To avoid all of the above, just need a hood.

Types of hoods

Classic hood

An ordinary hood is a medium-sized unit that is installed above the stove (gas or electric). It can be placed both independently and under various kitchen interior items, for example, wall cabinets. Its main advantage is the most democratic price among all types of hoods.

Built-in hood

Ultra-thin built-in hood is almost not noticeable. All its parts are designed in such a way that they are virtually invisible. This hood is mounted in the cabinet above the stove (in Ikea, for example, you can order special shelves with a niche for the hood). Its main advantage is that it in no way spoils the appearance of the kitchen.

The most relevant built-in hood for miniature kitchens, where every cubic centimeter of space on the account.

Dome hood

Dome hood монтируется таким образом, чтобы она нависала над зоной приготовления пищи (плитой). Она может быть:

  • Trapezoidal shape
  • Cylindrical shape
  • Cone shaped
  • Parallelepiped

In addition, dome hoods are:

  • Straight lines
  • Inclined

Inclined hoods are considered a more modern option. Its main advantages, which distinguish both specialists and ordinary customers, are:

  • The actual noiselessness compared to the standard flat hood. In inclined hoods, the engine is much quieter, as it is more advanced from a technical point of view.
  • Small sizes (from 50 cm) make it possible to “squeeze” such an extract even into a tiny kitchenette.
  • Inclined hoods have touch control and also have the option of remote control (usually).
  • Inclined hood is very easy to assemble. For its assembly, it is not necessary to call in specialists, it is quite realistic to do it with your own hands.

Retractable hood

Retractable hoods are also called telescopic, since it is thanks to the telescopic mechanism that they move forward over the cooking zone. They are tiny and easily fit even in the smallest gap above the stove. As a rule, these hoods are not connected to the duct.

Island hood

Island hood mounted in the ceiling above the cooking zone. This is especially important in spacious kitchens (for example, in a huge private house), where an island layout may involve installing a dishwasher in the corner, but a gas or electric stove - in the center of the room. It is very important that the hood is located exactly above the stove. If the ceilings are very high - the hood should be as powerful as possible.

How to choose a filter for the hood?

Regardless of whether or not your exhaust is diverted to ventilation, there must be filters in it.

Oil Filters

  • Disposable
  • Reusable

In the first case for the manufacture of filters can be used materials such as:

  • Acrylic
  • Sintepon
  • Flizelin

In appearance, these filters resemble a small soft mat. It is necessary to change them as far as pollution.

In no case can not wash the disposable soft oil filter! Even to save! These synthetic materials after washing, under the influence of water, temperatures and detergents will lose their properties and, thus, you will only harm your own hood!

In addition to disposable, there are still reusable oil filters. They do not need to be changed (only in the case of mechanical damage) and they are intended for operation throughout the entire period of use of the hood.

Externally, the reusable oil trap filter resembles a metal grill with a lot of thin foil mesh. It can (and should!) Be periodically washed. That is what it is intended for.

Multi-oil filter

Control panel in the kitchen hood

Push-button control

Historically - the very first type of control kitchen hoods. Its principle is extremely simple - each button corresponds to a particular function / mode of operation. Buttons have only one drawback, if they are not periodically washed, the layer of fat that has accumulated on them can cause the buttons to “stick” and work worse.

Slider control

Such control is based on moving the slider from one position to another. It can be fixed (that is, when there is a certain number of modes) or be smooth (when there are no certain positions and you can adjust the modes as you like).

Touch control

The most modern control of kitchen hoods - touch. It involves adjusting the operation of the hood using the touch screen. Just one touch to the desired sector of the screen, you can adjust the work of your hood. However, it is better not to work with such a panel with wet or dirty hands.

Connection with communications

With air duct

The presence of the duct determines whether your hood works as a hood or as a simple air cleaner. The withdrawal of air can occur in the ventilation or directly on the street. In this case, the air exchange is much higher, however, along with all the extra fumes from the kitchen, especially in winter, it will also go away warmly.

The smoother and more uniform duct walls, the better it works.

Without duct

This hood works on the principle of air recycling using filters. This ensures the preservation of heat in the kitchen, but does not completely remove harmful evaporation and excess moisture.

Other selection criteria

Rating criteria and expectations when choosing a kitchen hood for each customer has their own, but you should pay attention to the following points:

1. According to current sanitary norms, there is such an indicator as air exchange rate. In short, this is a criterion of how often the air in a room should be completely renewed within one hour. For each functional space it has its own (see table below). After all, the hoods are not only kitchen, recently the special popularity of drawing hoods in the bathroom to remove excess moisture from the room. For the kitchen, the air change rate must be at least 7 times per hour.

Air exchange rate according to sanitary standards

Type of room

4—7

Living room

2—4

Kitchen

7—12

Office

3—6

5—7

14—22

Garage

3—8

In order to understand whether the hood will cope with the task, it is necessary to calculate the volume of the kitchen (to do this, multiply the height of the ceilings by the kitchen area), multiply the resulting number by 7 (the minimum number of air changes per hour, for convenience, you can multiply by 10) and compare with power of an extract which is specified in its technical characteristics.

2. The larger the exhaust area, the faster it will clean the air.

3. Independent periodic switching is very useful if you cook a lot and often. If you have such a function, you will not worry if the hood is turned on or not, the technician will do it instead of you. Especially in many models you will be able to customize the period of inclusion.

4. So that the work of the hood does not irritate you, it should be as loud as possible.

5. Lighting on the hood will allow you to cook food without a ceiling light. However, remember that low-quality lamps can be misleading at the expense of the degree of readiness of the product, which we often determine by its color.

6. Another important point when choosing a hood - the presence of a remote control. Due to this, it will not be necessary to regulate the process of air exchange and filtration directly near the hood - you can easily do other things in the kitchen, simultaneously controlling and regulating its work.
