In 1988, Margiela met Jenny Meirens, the owner of a designer clothing boutique in Brussels. She saw in an unknown Belgian "the most talented young designer she had ever seen." Together they founded Maison Martin Margiela, and the next year they held their debut show of SS 1989. During his work, Marghela managed to tailor clothes from cards, posters, socks, false eyelashes and fur hats, decorated the body with badminton balls, created a bag from a motorcycle helmet.
