Девушки познакомились на работе: трудились в одной дизайн-студии в Милане, куда обе переехали в 2001 году. А в 2008-м объединились в дуэт Bernhardt & Vella. До этого немка Эллен Бернхардт (р. 1982) получила образование в Миланском политехе, где изучала промышленный дизайн, и успела поработать с архитекторами Пьеро Лиссони и Карло Коломбо. А итальянка Паола Велла (р. 1972) окончила Европейский институт дизайна, выучившись на дизайнера интерьера. Работала в Нью-Йорке в студии Gabellini Sheppard Associates, потом с Карло Коломбо в Милане.

Today, the studio is engaged in interior design, visual design, but their main forces are focused on creating furniture - the duet designs for Natuzzi, Arflex, Arketipo, Potocco, Calligaris and other brands. Their cooperation with Arflex, which lasts not the first year, is especially fruitful: the designers created tables, consoles, shelves and their main hits for the brand - translucent screens of two sheets of colored glass of pastel shades: casting colored shadows, they transform the space and change the view on it into depending on the angle of view. The series includes lamps, created on the same principle.

The design of the lamps is a separate great love of the duet. “We are not just developing lamps that give a beautiful light,” said Ellen and Paola. - Our objects create a comfortable and elegant atmosphere that fits any interior, and it is pleasant to look at them even when they are turned off. We combine different materials in the luminaires to provide visual lightness and a spectacular look. For example, for Artemide they connected PVC, which imitates paper, and brass. And for Arflex, they used multicolored glass. ”

For the Salone del Mobile 2018, the duo prepared almost a dozen new products: an updated curved rack for Arflex, a semi-circular Potocco chair and a sofa for Rugiano, tables for Bontempi and much more.
