Matera is one of the unofficial wonders of the world, included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, a kind of Disneyland for adults. Once upon a time there lived several thousand people, but the city was resettled, giving residents more comfortable housing, and for a long time it stood abandoned. Tour operators who turned the caves into five-star hotels for Japanese tourists, and Mel Gibson with his movie saga about Christ, brought him back to life.

The landscapes here are really Old Testament. It is believed that Matera was inhabited in prehistoric times, and even for Italy, where everything has a history, this is a unique place. Most of the old city, which is shown to tourists, carved into the rocks. The caves served as a dwelling, they prayed, they traded, they ruled the city. Many of them go labyrinths deep into the thickness of the rock.
