Architect, designer, artist, sculptor, set designer ... Frenchman Жан-Антуан Иерро can safely call himself a man of the Renaissance. He talks about the interrelation of different spheres of creativity, eclecticism as a lifestyle and about timeless design.

SALON: What is your education?

 - I started with painting. It was many years ago, more than 20. Then he began to create furniture sketches. Now I have architectural projects, I work as a decorator, a sculptor, as a set designer.

True, with painting and sculpture is easier than with furniture. In the arts, people perceive innovation more easily. You can create the most insane things without risking the reputation of an eccentric eccentric. Furniture design is much more conservative. My brand furniture COLOMBOSTILE (a total of about 300 models), as well as for my line under the brand HIERRO DESVILLES, is very dramatic and theatrical. You love her in your homeland. I myself am a big fan of Russian culture. At the age of 14 I heard the “Polovtsian Dances” by Alexander Borodin, and they startled me. Russian literature, in particular Leo Tolstoy, had a great influence on me.

S: Your creations are eclectic in many ways, aren't they?

 - For me, furniture design is like magic. I create things that I feel should have come into being. These are luxury items that they buy in order to satisfy their inner desire for beauty. My strategy is nothing forbidden: in the decoration you can use both gold and silver at the same time, you can mix light and dark varnishes, combine different colors in one piece. Incidentally, I was the first to suggest such a mix. The best of its embodiment was the furniture for COLOMBOSTILE. I wanted an unusual shape combined with an unusual finish. At the same time, these items should have been related to the classics. The result was a fantasy classic. Her place in the tales of Carlo Gozzi.

S: In general, you can be called a supporter of the classics. So what is a classic for you?

 - In music, this is opera. These are complex, deep things. They are rich in meaning. Similarly in design. Now increasingly tend to the classics. Why? To the classics come gradually. At first, they are addicted to external design effects, but when the first delight passes, I want what remains for descendants. Classic is associated with eternal values.

S: At the same time, your architectural projects are quite minimalist ...

 - The fact is that I want everything at once - stylization and clean design of glass and steel. I see eclecticism as a lifestyle. It leaves room for choice. Today you can wear a strict business suit, tomorrow - ripped jeans. As the English say, it is up to you.
