German designer Christian Werner (Christian Verner) grew up in Berlin. He now lives on the outskirts of Hamburg in a large house of his own, under whose roof both his bureau and the office of his wife Utah, also a designer, are located. When Christian's four children rush into his office, papers, rulers, pencils fly from the tables ... And Werner likes it allSALON: Mr. Werner, how did you become a designer? - I studied industrial design in Berlin, Hamburg. In the early 80s in Germany, design became a very popular activity; young designers had the opportunity to exhibit their work. And although in some cases it was a dead time, it was then that many funny things appeared, I would even say useless and impractical things that gave impetus to the development of industrial design in Germany.S: Have you long doubted the choice of profession? - I've never had a doubt. I just followed my ambitions and talent.S: You cooperate with companies such as LIGNE ROSET, ROLF BENZ, TONON, SCHONBÜCH, CLASSICON, WK-WÖHNEN, and they all produce furniture in a minimalist style. You are not interested in the classics at all? - I feel the present, I live in a modern environment. And trying to go forward. I come up with useful, practical things.S: Now they talk a lot about the interior for men and the interior for women. In your models, in my opinion, you can also trace this trend. - This difference we have long noticed. Men and women think and feel differently. On this depends on the choice of the things with which they surround themselves. Women mostly prefer emotional subjects, while men tend toward an academic and functional style. For example, my Libra chair sells well, because, as customers say, there is something soft and feminine in it. But there is furniture that speaks masculine, I call it musculinum. It is hardness, clarity, solidity. In the end, despite the fact that a man pays for the situation, a woman puts her hand to her organization. It is she who is the builder of the family hearth.S: For ROLF BENZ, you designed Dono, a multifunctional convertible sofa with a table top. How did this idea come about? - The company asked me to reconsider the old model of the sofa, which Mr. Rolf Benz designed 40 years ago. But I’m not interested in redesigning the work of my colleagues, and I began to think what could be offered. What was relevant at the time and what could be relevant today.S: Your favorite model? - 6900 for ROLF BENZ.S: What is important for you in design? - Uniqueness, honesty, the ability to make fun of yourself.
