Carlo Urbinoti works in industrial design for nearly half a century. Once he designed chairs, lamps, sinks ... anything he designed! The last 30 years designs baths for the company JACUZZI. About what should be the bathroom of the XXI century, why the bath needed a “tummy”, how to bathe children, chief designer JACUZZI tells in an interview with the magazine SALON-interior

SALON: I have a feeling that the bathroom becomes almost the main room in the house. Is this the impact of the PR industry? And are we all in any sense a victim of advertising? (smiles) - Well no . The bathroom really becomes the main room. And I understand why. (Thanks to the 21st century! Thank you in a good and in a bad way.) Although the bath itself is about 4,000 years old, it was widely used seventy years ago in its houses. This is very little, agree. And yet it was the bathroom that changed the most over the years. Not a living room, not a bedroom, not a kitchen - just a bathroom. Let's start with the fact that she (the room) appeared. Indeed, in the foreseeable past, the bathtub was stupidly standing in the middle of a quite ordinary palace room in the enfilade, and even though in the middle of a wealthy philistine house, it does not matter. It is important that there was no specially thought-out interior. Then, much later, a bathroom appeared. We still remember what it was: a small room with no windows, where the bathtub was barely placed, a sink pressed into the side of the wall, and, in fact, everything. That is, washed, shaved - and went out.S: And now? - And now it's another matter! A bathroom is no longer a small room, squeezed into a corner of an apartment, at the end of a corridor or somewhere else, that is, in some uncomfortable place in a house. Now the bathroom is becoming more and more, this is a space where a person not only deals with hygiene, but cares for himself. Relaxes, gets pleasure from communication with water, watches TV, listens to music, goes in for sports. Hydromassage in this series of super services belongs, in my opinion, the leading role. Again, a fashionable idea recently - a mini-pool in the bathroom. I want to say that the bathroom is no longer a space for individual use. Now you can take a bath together. Or your children can splash all together.S: How does all this information affect your activity, that is, the design of new models? After all, you have been designing baths for a good 30 years ... - Influences, and very much. This is how it should be: it is not design that determines life, but life influences design. I listen to what people need, and I try to give them a convenient, beautiful, pleasant product. I do not design style, I design ideas. Designing a function. For example, at one time I came up with JACUZZI bath with "tummy". Of course, I was primarily thinking about the shape of the egg, I took into account that the ellipse is a symbol of the beginning of life, the metaphor of the mother's womb and all that. But my "pregnant" baths have become so for purely functional reasons. If you imagine a person lying in a bath, then it is easy to see that he doesn’t need right angles there, this is an extra element. So I thought and cut off all the extra corners and slightly “puffed up” her funny “tummy”. On the one hand, the bath takes up less space in space, on the other, it holds more water and becomes spacious for those who are in it. At a certain stage, I suddenly wondered what a bath for two should be, and now, as I said, JACUZZI produces many different mini-pools. Again, a corner bath is a very popular solution. That is, our thought went even further.S: What is your bathroom at home? - Very spacious. Bath from JACUZZI, model Twin Deck. This bath and shower simultaneously - very convenient. The bathroom in my house is adjacent to the bedroom. I believe that this is a very modern trend: from water procedures you smoothly go to sleep, and vice versa. It looks like this: a bedroom, a dressing room and the bathroom itself represent a single space, not separated by doors and partitions. I would put the gym equipment in the bathroom, but this is not very convenient for my wife: I usually go in for sports while she is still asleep.S: What model would you recommend to those whose children prefer to swim together? - A corner bath is best. There is enough space and, which is important for children's games in the water, it is possible to move, change places. Children love it very much. If the bathroom is not as big as we would like, then I would recommend the Twin Deck model. There is plenty of water in it, which is important when there is more than one person in the bath.
