Ukrainian design and its 12 forwards

The exhibition of Ukrainian designers at the Design Week in Eindhoven (21-29. 10. 2017) was a big hit. Creative Ukraine. Between Tradition and Innovation - curators Olga Bogdanova, Elena Oranskaya, Alyona Solomadina and Katerina Sokolova called their project that way.

1. Dinara Kasko (Dinara Kasko)

Ukrainians love good food. Architect Dinara Kasko (Dinara Kasko Pastry Art) strives not only for perfection of taste, but also for perfect form. Dinara graduated from Kharkov State University of Construction and Architecture. Desserts for her were just a fad. However, what began as a hobby made it world-famous. Cupcakes and cakes are made in silicone molds printed by a 3D printer. The Geometrical kinetic tarts series was created by Dinara for SoGood magazine along with Jose Margulis, an abstract artist from Miami, a master of kinetic compositions from plastic sheets.

2. NOTT Design. Sergey Gotvyansky

"You want to say something, say it with a subject." For Sergey Gotvyansky, the design process is not a job, but an instrument of creativity. Studio NOTT Design was created by brothers Sergey and Alexander Gotvyansky in 2008. The portfolio includes villas, houses, penthouses, interiors, object design. In 2016, the Magneto luminaire and the VM Desk table received the Red Dot Design Award. Sergey says about the Dnipro candlesticks: “We are from Dnepropetrovsk. This is the industrial center of the region. Living now in a post-industrial society, we still feel the past. We must not forget our roots and childhood memories. ”

3. Hachu yuyu

The name of the design studio speaks for itself. “I want to paradise” creates a unique microcosm that changes personal space, ”the marketers of the studio say. Hochu Rayu is more like a multi-agency design agency than just a workshop. New development Helmfon - a device that blocks sound waves through a system of active sound absorption. What allows, in particular, to concentrate in open spaces. Another technological startup is the miniature Senstone gadget. He takes notes in one click, on the go translates into text and sorts it by topic (for example, diary, tourist blog, interview, etc.). Able to recognize 12 languages, holds a charge of up to 3 days.

4. 2b.group

Glory Balbek (Slava Balbek) is always interested in something more than just an object or interior. For example, among projects 2B.group (the workshop was founded by architects Slava Balbek and Olga Bogdanova) there is a creative space Prostir 86 in the territory of the former furniture factory in Kiev. It is for young creative people, with coworking, a lecture hall, a workshop and a show room of Ukrainian subject design. An ashtray 7.62 was exhibited in Eindhoven, an enlarged copy of the liner. “It is filled with ashes like powder. Bullets kill, smoking too. On top of the engraved direct warning. The concrete part of the object can be fixed, and the steel ashpit can be easily cleaned. ”

5. Decorkuznetsov studio

Valery and Ekaterina Kuznetsov, Decorkuznetsov studio For the first time the Entity lamp by Decorkuznetsov studio was shown at Paris Design Week 2017, together with Expolight.

The studio was created in 1994 by Valeriy and Ekaterina Kuznetsov. Designers have repeatedly received prestigious European awards, including the Red Dot Award and iF Design. The works of Decorkuznetsov studio are in the collections of the Rietveld Museum in Amsterdam, in private collections in the USA, Great Britain, Italy, Germany, Portugal, Russia and others. The Entity lamp (“Essence”) is a “mystery about objects and illusions, consumer culture and modern methods decorations. We use our own experience in trying to engage you in the design process. ” Entity is made from waste from the production of bags and shoes.

6. Irina Dzhus (Irina Dzhus)

The designer and founder of the brand Irina Juice creates conceptual clothes with an innovative cut. Design Master Juice bets on minimalism. According to the designer, in her works: “metaphysics of form and antiformity, volume and silhouette, surface and emptiness, contour and textures”. A distinctive feature is the maximum versatility of things. All JUS products are made of soft materials. “I began to use natural materials, to reflect on each design from a position of comfort and practicality, to make natural, earthly images in lookbooks - and it worked, JJUS clothes were worn.

7. Petcube

A simple increase in sales to partners is not enough. Their strategy is aimed at building a community in which they love to play with animals. "We are building a social network, a sort of Instagram for pet owners," explains Azhnyuk. "It will be a kind of video game, only with real animals."

For Alexander Neskin, director of technology for Petcube Inc., it all started with the fact that he had no one to leave a puppy. And he made a robot that played with Rocky with a laser pointer. The idea seemed promising: in the fall of 2012, together with Andrey Klen and Yaroslav Azhnyuk Neskin, he created a company that developed Petcube Camera. Friends invested their own 40 thousand dollars. Then they attracted another 70 thousand of "angel" investments. A pre-order of $ 250,000 was received by a startup using the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform. Petcube they brought to the US market, where pets, apart from their food, spend up to $ 10 billion annually. In October 2017, Petcube is called the US industry leader and writes about raising $ 10 million to “expand the development of new products marketing and sales in international markets ".

8. Sergey Makhno Architects

Architect Sergey Makhno believes that the key to success is love and hard work. He could create works of art that are pleasant and understandable to people, but instead he strives to make objects that allow him to develop artistic self-awareness. Makhno maintains a balance between design and art, modern technology and authentic crafts. Sergey tells about M-Flatware cutlery as follows: “We made spoons, forks and knives so that they looked like ancient Ukrainian tools - rakes and shovels. They contrast with the standard forms and make breakfast lunches a real adventure. ”

9. Katerina Sokolova (Katerina Sokolova)

VAZ Suprematic series. SOKOLOVA Design studio. “The geometric structure of vases is not only a decoration, but also functional flower holders. Even an empty vase will always be an object of art. ” Designer Katerina Sokolova. She graduated from the Kharkov State Academy of Design and the Arts, and completed an internship at the Burg Giebichenstein Kunsthochschule Halle.

SOKOLOVA Design studio unconditional good luck - Oxydation tables for Ligne Roset and Himmeli lamps for the French company Forestier, inspired by the “spider” - straw decoration of a peasant house for Christmas and Easter. 10. Masha Reva

Designer Masha Reva continues to be one of the main hopes of Ukrainian fashion. Masha had an internship with the Dutchman Walter van Beyrendonk and the American designer Takun Panichgul, she graduated from London Central Saint Martins. He devotes a lot of time to illustrations and drawings. He is fond of body art. The key idea is to transfer the body graphic image to textiles in a simplified form. Sometimes the contours are hardly guessed, sometimes visible clearly. She created a capsule collection, which she showed at the One Day Project in Paris during Fashion Week. Items from this collection are sold at Opening Ceremony, a conceptual New York boutique.

11. Own Studio

This year, Dasha Tsapenko graduated from the Design Academy in Eindhoven (DAE) and showed two projects. One, her master's, was shown as part of the Graduation Show at the DAE. Another is Dress_de_Code at Creative Ukraine. Between tradition and innovation. It aims to explore the relationship between man and clothing in a social and sociological context. Dress with 240 buttons transmits spatial choreography, which our body performs during dressing. “This is the embodiment of meditation and ritual. You are offered to take a step back from the everyday reality of an accelerated society in order to feel the “here and now” moment.
