How do experts of northern style see their history?

Scandinavia. When we think of Scandinavian design, we think of practical, stylish interiors, characterized by simplicity and close connection with nature. For the first time, the 1930 Stockholm Exhibition brought international attention to Scandinavian design. However, it was not until the 1950s that Scandinavians became really popular. In the post-war economy, the need arose for simple, compact and functional products for everyday life. In 1946 - 1952, Danish, Swedish, Finnish, and Norwegian designers were actively involved in creating an export product under the common brand Scandinavia. A strong and recognizable image was an important aspect of the marketing strategy. And in the global advancement of Scandinavian modernism, an exhibition of items for the home, which traveled to North America from 1954 to 1957, played an important role.

Golden years In the 1950s and 1960s, many iconic works were created, such as the famous Egg chair - The Egg - Arne Jacobsen, the elegant chairs of Hans J. Wegner and the light furniture of Bruno Mathsson, as well as textiles, glass and ceramics. The colorful prints of Viola Grasten and Sven Markely for the Swedish department store Nordiska Kompaniet were a huge success and are still in production. In the 1960s, the Swedish brand Ikea, founded in 1943, began its expansion throughout Europe. Combining functionality with affordability, she embodies the credo of Scandinavian design: design for all.

Verner Panton. Visiona installation for the Cologne Furniture Fair. 1970.

60-e Danish designer Werner Panton (1926-1998) - a symbol of the 1960s, a master of acidic colors, fluid forms, psychedelic furniture. It was he who introduced the aesthetics of pop culture into the interior. Particularly noteworthy is his installation Visiona for the furniture fair in Cologne. Finnish designer Eero Aarnio created fiberglass Ball Chair in the same years. And the Finnish company Marimekko began to produce famous fabrics with huge poppies, with Maya Izola. Today, the Scandinavian classic mid-century modern has become a welcome guest in interiors around the world. The exhibition reminds of companies founded from 1940 to 1970: Ikea, Fritz Hansen, Marimekko and Kvadrat, etc.
