Riva 1920: exclusive wood furniture

“The tree is the heart of our company,” say the owners of Riva 1920, Davide and Maurizio Riva. At the Italian factory they appreciate the beauty and brutality of the natural material, are able to catch the special character of each breed and are constantly experimenting. Wooden furniture - author's, eco-friendly, modern, superbly made and designed in the spirit of the latest trends - the horse of the brand.

Table Cube. Countertop from Cowrie, a prehistoric tree from New Zealand. Age 48 thousand years.

Recent luck is kauri, a prehistoric fossil tree from New Zealand. Lying in the local swamps from 5 to 50 thousand years old, today it goes to the manufacture of unique tables. This ancient organic came after another discovery of Riva 1920 - a few years ago the company introduced the fashion for bricoli - the piles on which Venetian houses stand. Every 10–20 years, bricoli require replacement and, thanks to the brand’s initiative, they find a second life in great furniture.

In the company's portfolio there is also an extensive series from the array of Lebanese cedar, and not from sawed trees, but the dead. Design stars - Michele de Lucchi, Mario Botta, Claudio Bellini and others have been noted in this project, creating expressive objects.

Molletta, diz. Baldessari e Baldessari. Cedar. The object is perceived primarily as an art object, close to the sculpture element of the decor. However, it can also be used as a seat.

The latest trends proclaim a fashion for a tree with a wild texture: cracks, grooves, knots and roughness. Such captivating imperfections are demonstrated by products from an array. This complex material requires the highest skill from the manufacturer. They, undoubtedly, are owned by Riva 1920 specialists: the use of five-axis and six-axis milling machines with program control is combined with filigree manual refinement. Cabinet makers still use antique elements, such as guide grooves in drawers or the type of connection of parts “dovetail”.

Clessidra - a stool that is used as a table, created for Riva 1920 by architect Mario Botta in 2009. In 2016, the model came out in new finishes. Included in a series of sculptured furniture from solid cedar. One of the new finishes of the Clessidra model is called Vulcano. The surface is cured, resulting in an anthracite black tint. Curve Bench was designed by Neil Brody - an Australian designer of Jewish origin, born in Tasmania. The model, like a sculpture, is carved from a solid block of cedar. Dark color is achieved as a result of vulcanization.

The high class of the brand’s products is also hidden in trifles, seemingly inconspicuous at first glance: cypress wood discs are attached to the same drawers on the back side, the sweet smell of which repels insects. Any product is accompanied by a serial number, certificate of quality and brand name. Raw materials come only from renewable forests. Do not stay in debt to nature, make products safe for both humans and the environment - the fundamental principle of Riva 1920.

The factory was founded in 1920, but the real world success began in 1992. Then at the Milan furniture salon the first buyers were the Germans. Today, the annual turnover is about 14 million euros, and Germany remains the main export country.
