Nemo: the light of italian design

Nemo is a young company, next year it will be twenty-five. She won the reputation of a progressive brand focused on design. Nemo has an excellent pedigree: it is a “derivative” of the company Cassina, which design fans do not need to submit.

Nemo was conceived as a modern enterprise, whose lamps would be organically combined with the furniture of the "parent" company. Success was swift. The first loud premiere was the lamp, which today is considered a cult - Dove. This model has defined a paradigm shift in the design of table lamps.

Nemo is included in a pool of brands that develop a phenomenon called “Italian Design”. Although authors from various countries cooperate with it: Swiss Hannes Wettstein, Spaniard Javier Mariscal, German duet Jehs + Laub, Briton Norman Foster, Frenchman Jean-Marie Massot, Japanese Arihiro Miyake, Lebanese Charles Kalpakyan. Well, the Italians, of course, also have: Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, Martino Gamper, Carlo Forcolini, Roberto Paoli, Federico Palazzari and others.

A special place in the portfolio is Masters collection. It includes remakes of canonical lamps created by the founders of modern design: Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriant, Vico Magistretti, Franco Albini, Katsuhide Takahama ... For example, Pierre Polen designed the Elysée wall lamp for the private smoking room of Georges Pompidou’s apartment in the Elysé Palace, and for the private Eriese Palace, and for the private room in Georges Pompidou at the Elysée Palace, and for the private lamp in Georges Pompidou in the Elysée Palace, and for the private room. Parliament invented Le Corbusier for the parliament building in Chandigarh, India.

Last year, a furore was made by another Le Corbusier remake - the Borne Béton lamp, created in 1952 for a residential complex in Marseilles. A model of bare concrete, designed for both home and garden, has proved to be very relevant these days. It is crucial that a company before you start to re-release design icons, buys copyrights from the heirs of the great designers. Nor does it automatically copy models, but adapts them to the conditions and possibilities of the twenty-first century.

A new chapter in the history of Nemo began with the arrival of Federico Palazzari: “For three years now, Nemo is completely in my possession. Of course, we have a lot in common with Cassina, but today Nemo is an absolutely independent company. When I arrived, the company employed 16 people, now it is more than 50. There are branches in France and the USA. The turnover is 15 million euros, we reached this figure thanks to an annual 30 percent increase over three years. ”

When Nemo came into being, Federico was 18 years old. And he knew nothing about the world, nor about the light. However, symbolically, on his desk was a Dove lamp. Palazziari studied law, at the age of 24 he already worked as a junior partner in an office, among whose clients Artemide was famous. “I met its founder, Ernesto Gismondi, through whom I understood how interesting the light was to me,” recalls Federico. - During one of the meetings at which I was supposed to study contracts, and instead flipped through catalogs, Ernesto said: “Or do you deal with contracts, or with lamps. One out of two". It was an important moment for me: I realized that passion had already arisen in me. ” Federico Palazzari has been a lawyer for several years who is interested in light. And then he created the company Omikron, which produced lighting systems for retail and lamps for the home. In 2012 acquired Nemo. “There was a merger of two companies. For the development of the company it was a crucial moment. "

“The principles and concept of light design are fundamentally different from furniture, it's like comparing cars and motors,” says Nemo. - You cannot buy anything in high-end class furniture for 100 euros, things are much better in lamps, even if we are talking about premium brands. And the lamp does not need to wait a few months. The furniture industry is focused on the human body. Light - on the perception and sensual apparatus. Therefore, we have much more freedom. The light industry is developing rapidly, the reason for this - the new LED-technology. They open up opportunities for us that we had never known before. It is more interesting and more powerful to work at all levels: on walls, ceiling, floor and even inside walls. The next technological challenge is the creation of luminaires without wires and cables. ”

In Russia and some countries of the former CIS, the Nemo brand is represented by Archistudio.
