Julio cappelliini and tod's: marble and mokasini

Shoe company Tod's and Giulio Cappellini are developing the project “Looking at Tod’s Leo”, which unites the world of fashion, art and design. Tod's Leo Clamp limited edition moccasin series are invented by five young design teams. Ceramics, marble, metal and wood are the materials that Giulio Cappellini suggested to the young.

Tod's first moccasins were released in the late 7's, with 133 rubber spikes on each sole (model patented under the name Gommino). Intended only for drivers. However, Gommino quickly became popular: Tod’s moccasins were not advertised at all by truckers but by American movie star Audrey Hepburn. Tod's luxury brand design is conservative, despite the rapid development of the fashion industry. Vary only the color and skin treatment. Gommino is created exclusively by hand from 35 pieces of leather: more than 100 operations are performed when creating one pair. Tod’s shoe company has been working with Giulio Cappellini for almost 10 years, trusting him with the most daring ideas. An innovative designer and experienced producer, he sees the industry a few years ahead.

Giulio Cappellini gives priority to international teams with a global outlook.

“I was looking for a new generation of designers,” says Cappellini. - Who would use their own vocabulary without repeating the great ones. The task was to intervene in a product that has already been developed in detail at the level of the finest craft work. Therefore, we concentrated on the material. This is where the field for design experiments. In short: less rendering and more prototypes. ”

Leather shoes had to convey both the quality of the leather itself and the luxury of other materials.

The idea of the project was that each of the five studios, including Lanzavecchia + Wai, Leonardo Talarico, mist-o, Studio Zanellato / Bortotto and Zaven, created its own model of leather moccasins, inspired by and based on materials unexpected for Gommino ceramics, marble, metal, wood.
