Decorative twisted form is manually cut out of maple and covered with ebony veneer. Gildas Bertelot, the cabinetmaker's son, lives and works in Montreal. He was born and raised in Paris, where he studied at the ENSBA (Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts) in the visual arts department, but honed his skills by moving to Canada. “My creative process begins with a drawing. It is much easier to create free forms with charcoal pencil and paper than with a cabinet maker. Then I make a reduced model in order to comprehend and correct the details, then I translate the object into the planned dimensions. Sources of inspiration are Oriental arabesques and arrogant botany, ”says the author. The “endless table” got to the Galerie BSL collection by chance. Gallery owner Beatrice Saint Laurent hunts for decorative things, made with skill and imagination.
