Fashion and nature

Fashioned From Nature — выставка больше, чем про моду и больше, чем про природу открылась в лондонском музее V&A. Музей знаменит своими кураторскими показами, которые фиксируют глобальный тренд, исследуя синергию областей: моды, дизайна, технологий.

By topic: Fashion for 100 years: an exhibition in New York

The organizers of the project remind that beauty can be dangerous, cruel and unreasonable. The exhibition explores clothing and accessories that were inspired by the amazing power of nature, as well as the influence of fashion on the environment and the devastating effects of production. “We are going to change our mind and the way we consume, we need to remind ourselves that we really appreciate in nature,” says exhibition curator Edwin Erman.

Featuring popular styles from the 17th century to the present day, the exposition includes earrings made from the heads of birds of paradise, decorated with 5,000 rainbow wings of muslin dress from the 1860s, a hat with iridescent feathers from the Himalayan monal and John Malkovich costume. The sound of birds singing and the cries of animals are mixed with the sounds of the destructive impact of man - with the roar of heavy machinery and machetes, cutting down trees.

Fashion has long looked at nature as a source of inspiration. However, in recent decades, the relationship between them has become difficult. The Wrap Sustainability Report warns that the UK garment industry is still the fourth largest threat to natural resources after construction, transport and agriculture.

Big names, including Michael Kors, Armani and Tom Ford, have announced their intention to ethically use materials, without cruelty to animals. Along with famous statements by Stella McCartney, Christopher Reburn and other luxury brands (such as Calvin Klein dress made from recycled plastic bottles), much of the show is devoted to studying the evolution of the raw materials used in clothing.

An important exhibit is a dress by Diana Scherer, grown from plant roots and a bioluminescent genetic engineering outfit created by British-Japanese artist Sputniko! in conjunction with the MIT laboratory and the National Institute of Agricultural Science of South Korea. • Выставка в лондонском музее V&A открыта до января 2019 года.
