Design miami basel 2016: from vera mukhina to kengo kuma

On Monday, June 13, Design Miami / Basel opens in Basel. The most ambitious galleries offering collection design are exhibited here: works of proven masters of the twentieth century, as well as modern author's objects. The first exhibition took place in 2006. Sam agreed to arrange Sam Keller, the then director of Art Basel, and a well-known entrepreneur and developer from Miami Craig Robinson. Actually, Robinson held Design Miami in December 2005 in Florida, and six months later, under the same brand, the event started in Basel. The idea was brilliant. Neither financial crises, nor change of partners (for a long time Design Miami / Basel supported HSBC and even collected a corporate collection of modern design, because American Express replaced it) did not affect the level of the event.

Experts who oversee the collection design market unanimously acknowledge that the Basel review is the most interesting. The reason for the success is clear: Design Miami / Basel takes place almost on the same dates as Art Basel, the contemporary art fair traditionally attended by rich Americans, Russian oligarchs, patriotic Chinese businessmen, and collectors with huge financial opportunities from around the world. Three minutes on the road and now, buyers are not looking at Damien Hirst's butterflies, but at the tables of Jean Prouvé and the chairs of Ron Arad. The building itself, artistic and aesthetic, built by the architects Herzog and de Meuron, strengthened the high status of Design Miami / Basel.

This year, 43 galleries are participating on the main site. Among the events will be a personal exhibition of Joris Larman at the stand of the American gallery Fridman Benda, a large collection of Murano glass works of Artemis Seguzo (1909-1999) at the stand of Marc Hieremans. Specializing in designer jewelry Elisabetta Cipriani wears several works by Chinese artist Aveyvey. In the exhibition every now and then, come across the stands of galleries, united by the Design Curio program. There are galleries with a unique offer, an original theme or a special concept. The International Gallery of Christina Krasnyanskaya Heritage Gallery with objects of Soviet design is of genuine interest, and the magnificent vase of the 1940s by sculptor Vera Mukhina will definitely find worthy owners.

Three years ago, at the Design Miami / Basel fair, for the first time, by analogy with Art Unlimited, the Design at Large platform was organized - a place to demonstrate installations and large-size opuses. This year, the audience will see Owan, the tent of Japanese architect Kengo Kuma (Galerie Philippe Gravier), as well as the Provisional School in the Villjuif suburb, a project by Jean Prouwe presented by Parisian Patrick Seguin. The special excitement is caused by the Ron Arad Pavilion - Armadillo Tea Canopy tea house.

Modern art and design have long entered into unofficial competition. The struggle is for the attention of the public, for the accounts of collectors, for status and intellectual prestige. Author's objects, original and extravagant, issued a limited edition, conquer all new territories that previously belonged only to art. Designers claim personal museum exhibitions, and auction prices for sofas and wardrobes are drawn to prices for video art and silicone sculptures.

The Design Miami / Basel exhibition will run from June 14 to June 19, 2016.
