Pros and cons of a log house

Houses of the log house were built in Russia for a long time. There are several technologies of construction, and each has its own advantages and disadvantages.

What good is a wooden house?

In a wooden house, natural ventilation, which does not affect the temperature inside, maintains optimum humidity in it - the excess moisture escapes through the walls. These houses are very warm, they are quickly heated and do not let out for a long time, since the wood has a low thermal conductivity.

The advantages of a log house?

  • First, environmental safety - wooden walls do not emit harmful substances.
  • Secondly - lightness - the tree is much lighter than brick or concrete, there is no need to make a strong foundation, there is enough of a not very deep (shallow-depth) strip foundation or a simple columnar base.
  • Thirdly, the high frost resistance of the log house, thanks to which a wooden house, unlike a brick, for example, can withstand an unlimited number of freezing and thawing cycles.
  • Fourthly, wood has good sound insulation.

Log cabin is relatively inexpensive, and you can start building and with a not particularly large budget. Prices vary depending on the type of wood, cutting technology, the quality of wood and other factors.

Disadvantages of a log house

Perhaps the main drawback of a wooden house is a long shrinkage (1-2 years). The problem is that until the house completely “sits down”, it is impossible to begin the interior trim (the exterior is not desirable at all), or you have to resort to different tricks, such as allowances, gaps, etc. When building a house of dry Karelian pine (kelo), which almost does not shrink, there will be no such problem.

Poor log house features are also fire hazard and rot. To reduce the risk of fire can be applied by applying special formulations that cover the wood. As a result of this treatment, wood will not give open fire, but only be charred. True, deep and uniform impregnation is unlikely to succeed, and the environmental friendliness of such products is not the best.

Wood is a natural material. Of course, mold, rot and various parasites appear. Rot and mold causes excessive moisture. All this weakens the design. Therefore, it is better to treat the tree with antiseptics, although you should not abuse them, as they are not environmentally friendly. It can be difficult to blow corners in such houses, if the quality of their cuts is poor. Contact the professionals in this case. Also, the disadvantages can be attributed to the fact that having to caulk the walls is expensive and time consuming.
