The head and founder of the company Vidal GrauМануэль Видаль Грау He comes up with absolutely unthinkable things: beds that look like shoes, armchairs in theater curtain assemblies, lamps that resemble gramophone pipes ... Classifications do not respond, but it is clear that at the beginning, too, was a classic. Meeting mister Manuel Vidal Grau at the exhibition in Milan, we asked him about the evolution of the classics and, of course, about his corporate style

Salon: Your booth is in the traditionally "classic" pavilion ... Does this mean that you consider the style Vidal Grau classic? - Vidal Grau - not a classic in the truest sense of the word. It is more appropriate to talk about modern style. Of course, classical furniture now also exists, because there are companies that make reproductions of historical things. But we belong to those who, based on the classics, strive to invent something new. S: In your opinion, which of the two paths is more relevant? - I think the second. Companies creating modern-inspired classics are much more important today.S: Are there any generally accepted standards for modern interpretations of the classics? - Obligatory, of course, no. Although, in my opinion, all manufacturers have something in common. Most use classical materials, mainly wood, and are based on classical forms. Forms and materials dictate certain rules. The simple option is to blindly follow them. So do many. At the same time, there are companies such as ours, which, inspired by the classics, are not satisfied with it alone. We try to invent new forms and combinations of materials. For example, five years ago in Italy, I saw a shoe — and made a bed. Another bed you see on our stand. It is a classic form. Its basis is wood, but for lighting we used a completely new material - a fiber that no one has ever used before. Wood, marble, glass, gold, bronze - we combine the most different types of materials to create something really new ...S: Gold is clearly dominant. Also influenced by the classics? - Not. In my youth, I worked with motorcycles, so the furniture that I did at the very beginning was metal. It occurred to me to cover it with gold. It was a success, and we could not forget it.S: That is, at first there were motorcycles, then - furniture? - Yes, when I invented my first metal coffee table - just like that, for myself - I was 24 years old and I was engaged in motorcycles. Then the company for which I worked closed down, and I had to look for something else. I made a few tables and carried them to furniture stores. Imagine buying them! It was new, because most companies at that time were working with wood. Then I built a TV stand, which, rising, turned into a dining table. She was also a success. The company gradually began to develop, then metal beds appeared - very modern, etc.S: Great contrast compared to what you are doing today ... - But why? Changes took place over 40 years. They were completely natural. We always invent new things. The tastes of people changed, my own tastes changed. Now Vidal Grau - this is what we like at the moment.S: How would you define your style? - There is no definite style. We are not based on something concrete and are not inspired by one thing. I am often told that our style is so peculiar that it can only be called Vidal Grau.
