Nicky and Simon Haas (The Haas Brothers) were born in Texas, today they are thirty years old. Father taught them stone carving and construction. And we must pay tribute, the brothers can work with their hands. Do not just sell their "taste and vision." It is not surprising that the curators of Cooper Hewitt Design Triennial, a design triennial dedicated to beauty, immediately included them in the program.
In 2010, The Haas Brothers moved to Los Angeles. For several years, prototypes of sofas and chairs with the motifs and aesthetics of an expensive sex shop were made: inflated and molded genitals, tightened straps, covered pillows with corset lacing. Reckless experiments helped the Haas brothers declare themselves against the background of universal modesty, moderate consumption and environmental correctness.
Today it is not known what the public will resent more: metal phalluses and vaginas or living fur of a Wyoming buffalo. In an interview with Nicky and Simon willingly explain that sex should not be tabooed, on the contrary, the more frank the joke, the freer the life. They claim that scabrous forms are the best means for easy communication. Frankly the erotic furniture after the war was made by the great Italian Carlo Molly, and in the 1960s - the British pop artist Allen Jones. Philippe Starck and Gaetano Pesce could hint at something in everyday objects, but only the Haas brothers “hold”, in fact, one topic and are not going to part with it. Of course, in their repertoire there are more neutral items, for example, ceramic vases of Accretion, Philly table, Beast bench, but the mood of extravagant chic and alcove pampering shows through them.
