Stephanie kuta - about life with art

French designer Stephanie Coutas grew up in Hong Kong in a colorful environment, where she received a creative charge and absorbed the mix of cultures. She started her career in the fashion industry, but in 2005 she created the 1001 maisons bureau, which deals with interiors. Today, Stephanie decorates penthouses, apartments, hotels, restaurants, creating complex, multi-layered, rich projects. Each distinguishes the love of handicrafts and expensive finishes, as well as modern art. She told the magazine “INTERIOR + DESIGN” how she created her apartment in Paris and gave advice to beginning collectors.

The office of a Parisian apartment is trimmed with eben panels in which shelves of bronze are mounted (d. S. Kuta). Table from Galerie Chahan. Sculpture "The fall of Icarus A. Wilke. The living room hostess combined with a hallway. On the wall is the work of F. Hubert (Art Medioni gallery) and the portrait of M. Gandhi, by Joseph (Galerie des Lices).

“The main thing for a collector is to love the work of art that he acquires. Then there will be no questions about where and how to place it: it will delight you regardless of the place. Art in the house - a very intimate topic. The value of a painting or sculpture is not determined by the value, but by your attitude towards it. Although, I do not argue, it is pleasant to realize that we have managed to make a profitable investment. My collection largely determines the image of this apartment. I live in the respectable 16th arrondissement of Paris, on the square of the United States. Wonderful place, quiet and green, five minutes walk from the Eiffel Tower and ten - from the famous street of boutiques Montaigne. The house, built at the end of the XIX century, I consider the quintessence of Parisian architecture. A beautiful example of Ottoman style, formed during the time of Napoleon III. I admire the high ceilings, large windows, openwork balconies fences. Although the layout is unimportant. Of course, I radically changed it in order to adapt it to the modern requirements of comfort. Moved the kitchen so that she was next to the dining room, equipped guest toilet. And, of course, I made separate dressing rooms with each bedroom, and my husband and I have separate bathrooms.

The entrance door is designed by S. Kuta and is trimmed with selenite.

One of the starting points in the design of the apartment was a chandelier, which I designed for Baccarat: I immediately imagined what the ceiling above it would look like. I also liked the idea of opening the living room to the hall, creating a perspective: so that both the chandelier and the mansion of the de Noay family were visible from the entrance, where the Baccarat museum is located today. Despite the solemnity and pathos, my interior is quite friendly. Serious things are connected with funny, a lot of cozy textiles, light environment is thought out. I found a good layout, collected cool furniture and do not want to redo anything. I feel good about the objects with which I surrounded myself. What is updated is a work of art. Furniture has objective parameters: the sofa should be comfortable, the coffee table should have a comfortable height. Art has no such criteria. Therefore, I periodically change jobs.

Marble pedestal table of opal, as well as blue sculpture, created A. Levi. Chandelier, diz. S. Kuta, Baccarat. On the floor is a modern coating - a board made of solid oak. Living room. Two large portraits by the artist who works under the pseudonym The Kid: I am the Alpha series, I am the Omega, I am the Beginning, and I am the End. Versailles carpet, diz. S. Kuta, Tai Ping.

One of my favorites is a young artist who works under the pseudonym The Kid is an amazing, talented workaholic. When making out the apartment, gave him a blank check. And after a while he brought me two works: giant portraits, crossed out with red crosses. I liked them so much that I immediately invented a wall with light for them, creating a flowing effect. Favorite work can greatly affect the interior.

Canteen. On the walls are two works by the Belgian M. Belanger, as well as a photo of a Chinese artist Liu Bolin. He became famous for “disappearing” self-portraits against the background of famous monuments. Arborescence chandelier, diz. E. Langle, Galerie Negropontes. Canteen. A screen is mounted in the mirror wall, which demonstrates Digital Shark video art from Moving Design. On the wall is a photo of M. Scholler's Jeff Koons with Floral Headpiece. Table Mikado, diz. S. Kuta: marble table top with bright pattern of veins, polished brass and bronze base. Chairs Aston, Minotti.

In the finishes used in this apartment, the emphasis is on bronze, platinum, wood in glossy varnish, galyushu (stingray leather). I adore textiles, he makes the house warmer (in this apartment she used Rubelli, Loro Piana, Chivasso fabrics). I like very much to combine velvet with leather, I upholste furniture surfaces with suede and nubuck. I also like nacre, marble and in general all the stones that can be found in nature. I work with them willingly, every time an unpredictable result is obtained. I am looking for new slabs around the world. My recent acquisitions: selenite and white opal. A table-pedestal of opal created specifically for the project Arik Levy.

The kitchen in gray stone is restrained and technological. Stephanie trimmed her bedroom with embossed nubuck-studded panels. At the window is the work of Laque, a Frenchman, J. Devasne, 1970. Jonathan Adler. Curtains of fabrics Pierre Frey, Loro Piana.

Planning the interior where you will exhibit works, leave the walls free, do not block their furniture. For example, I, with my love for large-scale art, are sorely lacking clean verticals. Works should not hang tight. The usual rule is one canvas on the wall, but if the paintings are taken from a series, there may be two or three of them - I just like to post similar works of the same type. As a wall covering, I recommend warm shades of white in a matte finish - they do not come into confrontation with paints.

Small saloon. Sofa Minotti. On the wallpaper Phillip Jeffries work R. Komba. Sculpture on a steel pedestal: Philosophical Casino V2012, author - P. Reyes. Shower in guest bathroom.

Hall. On the floor are white opal plates with brass and dark marble inserts. Panel of crystal tiles A. Levi for Baccarat. Built-in wardrobes with facades in a barn (stingray leather) and bronze handles, diz. S. Kuta.

Anyone who decides to become a collector, it is better to start with contemporary art. It is more accessible than, say, the 20th century. In addition, there is an opportunity to personally meet the author, and this is important. I try to buy paintings and sculptures directly from the artist. Communication with them, visiting the workshop gives the product a special value.

Main bathroom. The facades of the cabinets are decorated with platinum and are complemented by lighting. Chest - in black crocodile leather. All equipment, including plumbing, is made to order by design S. Kuta. Guest bedroom. Bronze sculpture A. Ferau. Painting S. Fay. Tray, Christofle tableware. A table in a gold finish, diz. H. and P. Garrido (Limited Edition), Garrido Gallery. Диваны изготовлены по дизайну С. Кута итальянской компанией B&B Italia. Столик из сосны, дуба, тика и бронзы: Galerie Chahan. Minotti chair. On the pedestal is a Chinese vase of the 18th century. Wallpaper It’s Greek to Me, Phillip Jeffries. Guest bedroom. The storage system hostess home trimmed with white skin. In a niche is the work of Louis Vuitton 2001, author S. Zuder (Galerie Lumas). At the window is a chair (Galerie W) and vintage tables, Rubelli bedding. Minotti armchair against the background of eben and bronze panels.
