Snøhetta: stairs to the sky

The staircase that goes to infinity was created by Norwegian architects Snøhetta, Everything Elevated design studio Brooklyn and Danish furniture makers Erik Jørgensen. The Portal project was shown at the Milan Design Week 2017 as part of the Holy Handmade exhibition.

The free-standing staircase is clamped by two round mirror podiums, which create the illusion of its endless continuation up and down. Stan Rossi (Stian Rossi), an architect at Snøhetta, explains that Portal was the result of an integrated and interdisciplinary design approach.

Monolithic composition invites the viewer to consider it from different points of view. “Portal” is made of solid oak, painted black, and covered with cohiba leather from the manufacturer of high-quality furniture Erik Jørgensen Møbelfabrik (Denmark). Continuing the tradition of Danish design, the factory Erik Jørgensen publishes masterpieces of the “king of chairs” by Hans Wegner, collaborates with GamFratesi, Louise Campbell, Monika Forster and others.
