Ron arad: “refugee from architecture”

British-Israeli designer - so imposing Londoner Ron Arad calls himself (Ron Arad, p. 04.24.1951). This year he turned 65 years old. Born in Tel Aviv. Long ago he lives and works in London. Journalists call Arad "a refugee from architecture," recognizing that the experimental, uncompromising focus of his career is precisely the subject design, not architecture. He began studying in Jerusalem, at the Bezalel Academy of Art and Design (1971-1973), continued his education in London - at the famous Architectural Association, where the utopian and visionary, the sixties Peter Cook, led the young pro. In 1981, Ron and his girlfriend Carolyn Thorman founded the firm One Off Ltd., which in 1989 became the architectural and design practice of Arad Associates. From 1998 to 2008, Arad thundered throughout Europe as a professor at the Royal College of Art, loving controversy and controversy. In RCA, he loosened up the reinforced concrete rules of the school, trying to cheer up his gifted students, among whom were Paul Koksij, Julia Loman, Peter Marigold. His most loyal follower of Israel, Assa Ashuah, in imitation of the maitre, began to wear the same hats, black pants and turtlenecks.

All actions and statements of Ron Arad are permeated with love of freedom and fundamental differences from their colleagues in the workshop. “Art begins when the problems of survival are resolved and the time of excesses comes. The more the design goes beyond the real needs, the closer it is to art. Very rarely do I create something really necessary. And from this point of view, I am an artist. My iron furniture has a bright esetika, but I believe that it is functional. Do these chairs shout: “Look at us, we are a sculpture !? In my opinion, they just sit comfortably. For me the main thing is not to repeat myself. This is what I fear as fire ... ”

Of course, Ron Arad is a true star of modern design; Numerous solo exhibitions at the best venues of the world, be it the Pompidou Center, the Museum of Modern Art in New York or the London Barbican, testify to the height of his reputation. His short-run items, prototypes and unikaty gallery owners willingly and very successfully sell. Perhaps Arad is one of the designers, with the creativity of which collectors of modern art began to look closely to the tables and chairs. No wonder, since the start of his career was the hardest for the British industry in the 1980s. He simply had to wriggle out and do the museum things: the Rover Chair, the all-terrain vehicle, the Transformer and the Aerial remote control lamp. In later works, he experimented with hardened steel (“Well-hardened chair”, Well-Tempered Chair; shelves “Bookworm”, Bookworm).

Patricia Morozo expressed the most true feeling of a sample from the mid-1980s from Ron Arad. “Ron was an artist who used design as a means of expression. He had furniture made by hand from metal, in fact it was a sculpture. But he wanted to turn these forms into upholstered furniture, but he had no idea how this happens. ” Surprisingly, it was this year that the Italian factory Moroso celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Spring collection - a number of Arad chairs and chairs were installed in Milan, including the iconic Big Easy Chair, which was originally made by hand from steel. The designer himself admits that this collaboration was a turning point in his career, but believes that it also had a strong influence on the path of the factory.

“Art collectors often live among terrible furniture, its appearance is shocking! How to explain it? "

And in 2008, the Studio Ron Arad Architects started working in parallel. Then came the so-called “Italian period” by Ron Arad: from 1994 to 1995, he sat in heavenly beauty near Lake Como, in the Ron Arad Studio organized by him, invented furniture and produced it at the same time.

Until now, his favorite materials are steel, aluminum and polyamide. Despite the fact that his whole type of thinking was created for unikats and collectible design, Arad still worked a lot with factories. Among his customers at various times were Kartell, Vitra, Moroso, Fiam, Driade, Alessi, Cappellini, Cassina, Magis. Of course, the real victory over fate was the realization of his architectural project. In 2010, the Design Museum opened in Holon, Israel, a suburb of Tel Aviv, and a spectacularly curled red ribbon of Corten steel — an element of the facade — walked around the world’s press.

Today he works in the North of London in Chock Farm. Not only the studio and workshop fit in the premises of the old piano factory, but also a small space - its own gallery-showroom, where Arad himself exhibits his belongings. The anniversary year of the master is full of exhibitions and premieres. Atelier Swarovski Home has included his typography in his debut collection. The London Papardelle chair (1992) was one of the most expensive lots at the charity auction Time for design in favor of the London Design Museum and was sold at April 29 for £ 89,500. st. For Design Miami / Basel 2016, Ron Arad designed the Armadillo tea pavilion. And the most recent performance of an unshaven Getlman in a branded hat was a mobile sculpture in the courtyard of the Royal Academy of Arts.
