Driade: aesthetic laboratory

The best world designers work for the Italian brand Driade, so everything that is published under this brand - be it furniture, light, vases or carpets - is distinguished by bright artistry, gushing creativity and verified artistic taste. Driade calls himself an aesthetic laboratory, whose employees are engaged in the continuous introduction of beauty into the living space. This year, at the Milan furniture salon, art director Driade, eminent British architect David Chipperfield turned the company's stand into a multi-room house, where each of the invited designers created an interior in which he would like to live. With the new furniture, Philippe Starck, Konstantin Grcic, Naoto Fukasawa, Lievore-Alter-Molina trio, Fredrikson-Stellard duet and Louis and Roberto Palomba - a starry party participated in the DriadeLivingRoom project.

In Milan, they also showed a new collection of Art of the Objects accessories, behind each of which stands a famous author or art studio: watches, vases, candlesticks - not just objects, but miniature art objects, functional and paradoxical at the same time. Authors such as Lucidi Pevere, Philip Bestenheider, Giorgio Bonaghuro created the vessels of Murano glass, silver and copper.

Eclecticism, mixing of cultural codes, the ability to arouse delight and curiosity - all these properties Driade declares as the basis of its philosophy, and despite the fact that a whole kaleidoscope of authors works for the brand, any object released under the name Driade corresponds to this concept.

Driade was founded in 1968 by three enthusiasts: Enrico and Antonia Astori and Adelaide Acherby. They were fascinated by the ideas and images of modern design and art and decided that they would produce furniture resembling art objects that avant-garde aesthetics connoisseurs would begin to collect as real works. In the 1970s, only Italian designers collaborated with Driade: Rodolfo Bonetto, Enzo Mari, Nanda Vigo, Massimo, and Lell Vinieli ... The founders of the brand relied heavily on communication with the public and customers. They tried to promote their ideas, cultivate tastes, inform about trends. They brought a common conceptual denominator to the creative statements of individual designers: they released catalogs, invented slogans, and made presentations.

In 1982, the first catalog was released, in which entire living spaces were shown, decorated with furniture and Driade objects, this is how the brand promoted its philosophy. 1984 is a significant date for Driade: Philippe Starck begins to work with the company. His debut for Driade was Costes. It still remains a bestseller. Cooperation has not ceased since: over the years, Starck has created more than 30 models of chairs, armchairs, sofas, tables and poufs for the brand. And Miamiam is a collection of cutlery from Stark. This year, the designer presented several new products to the Milan salon: the Wow modular sofa, the Cinemascope chair and the Lou Eat and Lou Think chairs, more like anthropomorphic sculptures and organically complementing the Lou Read model, created a little earlier together with Eugenie Kittle.

Stark became the first international star attracted by Driade. Immediately after it came other celebrities and brilliant talents: Ron Arad, Elliott Littman, Lewis Clote, Toyo Ito, David Chipperfield, Kazuo Sejima, Mario Bellini, John Pouson, Matteo Tung ... At the same time, Driade decided to release not only furniture: Czech Master Borek Sipek opened a new direction in the company - designer accessories: hand-blown vases, silverware, candlesticks, frames and jewelry boxes - all this has become an integral part of the brand's product range. Star designers eagerly take on accessories: Paola Navone made the Agadir collection of dishes, Ron Gilad - glasses and decanters La Sfera, Fabio Novembre - 100 piazze series of trays, Nendo - Astrology watches ...

The company has turned its headquarters in Fossadello, near Piacenza and not far from Milan, into a real design laboratory, where design work is going on, technologies and materials are being studied. The architecture of pure lines, bright minimalist spaces symbolize the freedom of creative thought. In 2008, the chair Mt, created by Ron Arad, brought the brand the highest designer award in Italy - Compasso d'Oro. The two-tone chair is an abstract sculpture rather than a piece of furniture, and the result of a complex technology of hot-molding plastic and high-precision laser cutting.

From the mid-1990s, the company opened a new direction - the Driadestore collection. It includes bright and avant-garde furniture for the young and fashionable, at more affordable prices than the classic art design objects from Driade. The direction was led by Philippe Starck, and took part, among others, Konstantin Grcic, Matteo Thun, Alfredo Heberley, Tokujin Yoshioka, Patrick Norge.

In the beginning of the 2010s, Driade was going through a difficult period: with the creative component, everything was as good as ever, but talented managers and economists were needed. Because of the problems, the brand had to abandon the luxurious showroom in the old Gallarati Scotti palace on Via Manzoni, where modern furniture, light, carpets and vases were displayed against the backdrop of lush baroque frescoes, stucco and marble columns. In 2013, Driade entered the Italian Creation Group, which took up the economic recovery of the brand, immediately investing 7 million euros in it. New CEO - Stefano Kore, a fan of Ferrari and Patek Philippe watches, once again relied on the brand image and communication with the public.

In 2014, he invited to Driade a new art director, the famous British architect David Chipperfield. His bureau immediately set about the interiors of the new flagship showroom Driade on Via Borgogna in Milan and a few months later, in January 2015, it was opened: a three-level space filled with light, completely white, minimalist, kept in the laconic manner characteristic of Chipperfield, - A great background for bright artistic objects that Driade is famous for.

“We wanted this showroom to become the absolute embodiment of our brand identity. This is more than just a store, this is a real gallery of art and design, our first, important step at a new stage, which is just beginning for us, ”said Stefano Kore.
