The wonderful castle of Gabriel in Normandy belongs to Yves Saint Laurent and Pierre Berger. The latter with great pleasure and enthusiasm creates a beautiful garden around it. On the hills of Deauville, this man with a pruner in his hand and passion in his heart indulges his beloved hobby Very often in the media, this work of landscape art is called “the garden of Yves Saint Laurent”, while Pierre became a true devotee of the project, and the idea of creating this garden belonged to him. When Yves and Pierre bought a house in the early eighties, Berger, inspired by the work of two English designers of the beginning of the century — landscape painter Gertrude Jekyll and architect Edwin Luytens — suggested to Franz Bakler, a wonderful landscape designer from Switzerland, to put the garden into practice. In 1987, a well-known specialist, Luis Beneck, was recruited to complete one of the most scenic sites, what is called the "closed garden". In the process of implementing this unusual project, it became necessary to somehow beat, use the wall around the former, and now destroyed, tennis court. The idea of a “medieval garden” behind a high fence came to mind almost immediately. Luis Benek was able to restore the original division into eight parts of this extensive site measuring 50 by 30 meters. Soon the site was completely covered with stripes of sod. Here they planted aromatic, medicinal and ornamental plants and flowers, in each zone their own. Where the old tennis court was located, Franz Bakler planted fruit trees and Luis Beneck kept them in the new garden plans. For the design of a “closed garden” a very specific set of plants was chosen, based on a variety of shades and a careful selection of species: there are even flowers from the Mediterranean coast, which would seem to have nothing to do on the banks of the English Channel, as well as wild plants, and which ensures their remarkable condition "in captivity". All this is a rather difficult task for the five gardeners who are constantly engaged in this garden. Color diversity is based solely on the nuances of green and gray, complemented by colors of four shades: yellow, blue, pink and white. After all, this is a very gentle and sensual garden. What are the sources of Pierre Berger’s passion for plants and flowers? He lived most of his life in England, where, in his opinion, the most beautiful gardens in the world are located. Together with Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre created his first landscape work in the very center of Paris, in rue de Babylon. Then they restored the garden of one of the artists in Marrakesh, Morocco, in parallel with the embodiment of gardening ideas in Deauville. The garden for Pierre Berger is more than just pleasure. This is a true pleasure, but one that can be touched.
