Fashion for giant things

The main trend of recent years in all that concerns the design of technology and smart things, was and remains microminiaturization. Designers of furniture and interiors made a counter-trend. And now computers quietly fit into the pocket, and floor lamps barely fit in the room

Looking at the now fashionable giants, I recall the fairy tale about Alice in Wonderland, in which the size of the objects is a convention, the value is variable, depending on the circumstances and imagination. Table lamps, suddenly grown to the ceiling, teapots at half the height of a man, and chairs with tall backs in favor of decorators. Non-scale objects are good as accent ones, and you should not be afraid to put them in rooms of medium size - by specifying a different coordinate system, these gullivers move apart the space.

By and large, large furniture as a phenomenon is a well forgotten old. From time immemorial in the throne halls and ceremonial rooms, multi-meter tables were an indispensable attribute of the furnishings, behind which more than a dozen people could gather.

Huge things as a fashion trend were shown last winter at the Cologne Furniture Fair. An installation with a playful name Size Matters united fashion giants in one show - shown side by side, they created a real sensation. And in Milan, this topic was developed by the eccentric Marcel Wanders - in his Personal Edition collection he presented three-meter crocheted cacti and a Calvin lamp to match his height.

In principle, any object enlarged several times acquires the properties of an artifact and outgrows itself, even if it retains its main function. It becomes, as they say, larger than life - more than life.
