“An ideal house should be built by a person with a clear understanding of what he wants from this house. The house must be filled with life, and in its purchase or construction there must be a vital necessity. I plan my house based on real needs. The number of people, children in the house, their desires dictate what it will be. I have so many bedrooms, not because it is necessary, but because so many people actually live with me. It is impossible that the house had empty rooms. It should be filled with life, and people should be good in it. And a person needs to be in a living human environment. The town house is the house, from which I can walk 80 meters to the cafe.
It is good if the house turns out to be architecturally beautiful and will correspond to the place, the environment, the culture in which it is located. In the Baltic States (Evgeny Grishkovets lives in Kaliningrad. - SALON) Provencal style house will look ridiculous. And the Russian hut here does not look very good. A house made according to the Swedish or Danish canons would be more appropriate. And Art Nouveau is perfect. He was invented in these places, for this air, the sky, the people who live here. I bought my own house almost two years ago, and it is located in the center of Kaliningrad. This is an old German mansion built in 1934, a monument of architecture. I need to save and restore it in the form in which it once existed. During the residence of the Soviet people in it, he suffered greatly, the long panoramic windows, typical of the Jugendstil, were laid. The shape of the roof was changed, heavy blows were made on the porch: it was greatly reduced, instead of a veranda some kind of creepy extension was made. But this house is dictated by the design of the interior. In it, some baroque things will not look. He dictates the exact simple decisions, he acts as an architect.
Buying a home is a serious and adult affair. An apartment, even as big as mine, is not the same as a house. You can sell one apartment, buy another, move. Having lived in Kaliningrad for 11 years, I did not answer the question whether I would stay here or move to another city. The apartment did not dictate such a serious decision. So buying a house has become for me the first very, very adult act. The play “Home” is a description of the events that happened to me during its purchase. This is a documentary story describing my conversations. The hero of the play, like me, saw the house and realized that these walls, a small garden, a roof were the place where he would meet old age. I saw a lot of houses in my life, but when I saw this, I decided with lightning speed what to buy. Three minutes before, I most definitely knew that I was not going to buy any home. But I saw and understood what I wanted. It's like falling in love. ”
