Architect Andrey Tsygankov, the author of fashionable elite restaurants in Moscow and Petersburg, talks about interesting decorating techniques that can be successfully applied in the interior of an apartment or house

Architect Andrey Tsygankov: “In general, all techniques characteristic of public interior can also be used in private. And it’s not scary that the decor of a restaurant or cafe is usually more theatrical than home decor, that it is, so to speak, played to the public. It seems to me that he is interesting. It is not necessary to arrange the whole house in the spirit of a restaurant or cafe, but it is quite possible to apply some individual solutions you like.

When we made the interior of the Gelsomino cafe in St. Petersburg, the walls were covered with velvet, they sewed silk furniture covers, framed the windows with picture frames, and draped with velvet and silk curtains. In addition, large picture frames were installed vertically. THEY WERE INSPECTED FOR KARAOKE AS AN ALTERNATIVE SCENE. (When a singing person is seen in the frame, it is a kind of television for those around him, and the performer does not need to go on stage - many are so much more comfortable. We used the idea of such frames later in the Tantrum club.)

Here are a few ideas that are suitable for a private interior. As for the vertically set frames, they can be used not only in the entertainment rooms of a private house (this idea lies on the surface), but also for zoning the open space of the hall, living room, dining room. The photo shows how the “ugly” windows of the basement floor were decorated: THEY ARE TAKEN IN THE FRAME, AS A WORK OF ART, and draped like a pew. Thanks to this approach, the windows do not seem to be what they were originally; it seems that the drawing of windows is not some flaw, but part of a common intention.

In general, if you have some kind of “inconvenient” architectural detail in the “condition of the task,” which is impossible to do anything with, here’s a universal recipe: pay attention to it, accentuate it, deliberately select it. A typical example is carrier columns. We, in particular, faced such a problem in the interior of the restaurant L'Albero. It was possible to solve it again, by the way, with the help of frames for paintings: we framed the columns, laying the frames around them horizontally, but not evenly, but with a beautiful wave. Such a technique is quite applicable in the living room or hall of a private house.

THINK BIG, THE AMERICANS SAY, THERE IS A THOUGHT IS SCIENTIFIC. In the private house that I built for my friend, the wood is rubbed ... with ashes (it looks like amazing patinating), and the plinth is made of baked rope. The owner of the house once found us with a colleague for burning this rope. To the question “What are you doing?” We answered: “Plinth”. One can only guess what would happen if the owner did not think broadly. ”
